MARGARET J. NOWLAN

Well Known Lady, Prominent in Work of her Church and Grange Passes Away
(Feb. 10, 1925)

   Mrs. Margaret J. Nowlan died at her home on Albany street on Tuesday morning, following a brief illness, of pneumonia.

   Mrs. Nowlan was the daughter of William and Catherine Lett who were born in Wexford county, Ireland, the family tracing their ancestry to Edward D'Arcy and the Clifford's of Morris Castle, Ireland.  The parents came to this country in 1851.

   Mrs. Nowlan was born in Greene in 1853.  When a little girl the family removed to Oxford locating on Albany street where they resided for many years.  Mrs. Nowlan received her education in Oxford Academy.

   In June, 1876 she was united in marriage with Thomas Nowlan of Binghamton who was a doctor and druggist and they resided in that city until failing health caused her husband to relinquish his practice and they returned to Oxford.

   About 1881 she opened a millinery store in the block now occupied by the Rambo Tea Room and successfully conducted this business for a number of years, finally selling about fifteen years ago to Mr. Sims, who later sold to Mrs. Jas. A. Wells.

   In 1897, two years after the death of her mother, Mrs. Nowlan and her sister, Miss Sarah Lett, returned to Europe and visited relatives there and in the British Isles.

   In 1913 Mrs. Nowlan became interested in chiropractic treatment and she and her sister went to Chicago where both took a course in this work.  They then engaged in this work for about three years in Binghamton but owing to the sister's poor health returned to this village where she has practiced being very successful in this work.

   For several she has been the efficient secretary of Oxford Grange where her passing leave a loss that will be keenly felt.  She was a loyal and consistent member of St. Joseph's church and an earnest worker in all parish activities and was a member of the Altar Society.

   Surviving is the sister, Miss Sarah Lett of this village and four cousins, Mrs. J. L. Thompson of Oxford and Miss Catherine Redmond and John and Daniel Redmond of New York

   The funeral will be held at St. Joseph's church this Friday morning at 10 o'clock.
