OXFORD, NEW YORK, FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 1902
Mr. Knott, whose portrait is shown above, has been clerk of the Board of Trustees of the village of Oxford without interruption for the past twenty-nine years, having been elected to that office May 13, 1873. B. M. Pearne was president of the village at that time, and T. L. Moore, now of Utica, was Mr. Knott's immediate predecessor. The village was incorporated in 1808, but the oldest book of records now in Mr. Knott's possession dates back only to 1814. Since that time they are preserved complete. The earliest book is not an inch thick, but it contains the records of forty years. As the village has grown its business has increased, and the proceedings during Mr. Knott's clerkship have filled several large volumes.
Mr. Knott is a native of Norwich, having been born in that village June 9, 1840. He came to Oxford with his parents in May, 1862, and has since been engaged in the harness business which he still conducts. Mr. Knott is a very prominent Mason, having been High Priest of Oxford Chapter for twenty years, and secretary of Oxford Lodge for a like period. He is also a Vestryman and treasurer of St. Paul's church, was for years a member of the Board of Trustees of the old Oxford Academy, and is a member of the Hook and Ladder company, and Oxford Lodge, A. O. U. W.
Mr. Knott is the veteran high priest of Oxford Chapter, No. 254, R. A. M. He has held this office for the past 20 years. NOTE: THIS WAS THE CAPTION UNDER THE IMAGE.
