JAMES H. KNICKERBOCKER

Civil War Veteran Born in Smithville - Lived in McDonough and Died in Ellisville, Illinois

James Henry Knickerbocker a former Chenango County man and a veteran of the Civil War, peacefully passed away, after a lingering illness, at his home in Ellisville, Ill., at 11:30 a. m., June 15, 1919.

James Henry, son of William and Prudence Knickerbocker was born at Smithville Center, December 18, 1834.  The early part of his life was spent in the town of his birth.

May 25, 1859, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Smith, a daughter of Daniel and Eliza Moore Smith of the town of McDonough.  Nine children were born to them, five sons and four daughters, all of who are now living.

August 11, 1862, Mr. Knickerbocker enlisted in the Civil War, and left his wife and two small children, necessarily, to each must come hardships and sufferings, which were bravely met and overcome.

In July 1865, he received an honorable discharge and returned home and remained in New York state, the most of the time occupied in farming, until 1884, when he with his family moved to Illinois and purchased the farm which is now owned by his son Vern.  He worked his farm until about twenty years ago when he moved to his comfortable home in Ellisville where he has since lived and from where he peacefully passed to the "Great Beyond."

A hard worker, a good citizen and soldier, a kind neighbor and faithful friend, a man interested in the up-building and good of the community where his last years were spent, one who well remembered and frequently visited, showing his loyalty for, the home of his youth, has passed away, and will be missed not only by the many friends in Illinois, but by the neighbors and friends in "Old Chenango County" who are still plodding along life's journey, and whose sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

                                                                                                                                 A. B. M.
