Mrs. Evalyn M. Lewis
(1935)
Mrs. Evalyn M. Lewis, aged 63 years, died Sunday morning, July 21 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V. Carl Emerson. She had been afflicted with heart disease for the past two years, but had been seriously ill only two weeks.
Mrs. Lewis was born February 7, 1872, in the town of Coventry, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Merritt. When a young woman she came to Oxford and spent the greater part of her life in this community.
For many years she was an obstetrical nurse and was very successful in this calling. For the past few years she had been nurse at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Pa., and had spent her vacations with her daughter here.
Mrs. Lewis possessed a sunny and cheerful disposition which earned her the affection of her many patients, and in fact all who came in contact with her. During her illness, she has maintained a lively interest in the activities of the community and was continually looking for ways in which to ease the burden of her illness for others.
She was a communicant of St. Paul's church and active in the Parish Aid and Woman's Auxiliary.
She was a charter member of Go-Won-Go chapter D. A. R., and a member of Lafayette Chapter, Order Eastern Star.
Surviving besides her daughter, Mrs. Emerson, are three grandchildren, Betty, David and Bertrand Emerson, and three sisters, Mrs. J. E. Ives of this village and Mrs. A. J. Blatchley and Mrs. William Pratt of Binghamton.
A prayer service was held at the Emerson home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 with the funeral service following in St. Paul's church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. H. C. Whedon officiated. Burial was made in the Van Wagenen cemetery.
The bearers, all young men of this community whom she had cared for in their infancy, were Frederick Rogers, Robert Westover, Robert Seymour, Clifford McNitt, Lynn Loomis and Allen Cooper.
