Mrs. Rector Pittsley of Brisbin Shot Herself, Monday
Mrs. Virgie Pittsley, wife of F. Rector Pittsley of Brisbin, while mentally deranged, shot herself Monday morning between the hours of 10 and 12, in the right temple.
Mr. Pittsley is building a new house about a fourth of a mile below Brisbin, and the family have been living in an old house adjoining during the construction of the new home. Mrs. Pittsley for the past year had been in poor health and often complained of pains in her head at at times was melancholy. She had never threatened the taking of her own life, but letters left by her showed that she had contemplated suicide in September. About a month ago she lost a baby one week old and this affected her greatly.
When Mr. Pittsley returned home Monday noon, he found his wife dead on the bed with a rifle in her hands. Beside the bed were two letters, one written in September stating that she had severe pains in the head and the she would be on the Lackawanna railroad track when the midnight train went south. The other letter was written recently and contained 24 pages, and with it was a short note saying that she had changed her mind and was going to shoot herself.
Indications showed that Mrs. Pittsley had taken an old army revolver loaded one chamber but the ball did not fit the chamber and would not work. She had then placed it under her pillow and taken a small 22 caliber rifle, laid down on the bed and placed the muzzle to her right temple and pulled the trigger with her right hand thumb. Death was instantaneous and she was holding the rifle in position when found by her husband. Dr. Morse of this village, coroner, was called and found the facts as above stated. The unfortunate woman had many friends who deeply grieve at her rash act. She was 33 years old and is survived by her husband and two children, Evelyn and Harold, who have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood.
