Jehiel S. Dunn

(Dec. 5, 1922)

The Summons to Depart to the Home Prepared for Him Found Him Ready

On Tuesday morning at the home of his son, George H. Dunn, at Lapeer, occurred the death of Jehiel Spafford Dunn, aged 75 years.  Mr. Dunn was many years a resident of Oxford, but the last few years of Cortland, Homer and Messengerville.

Born in the town of Greene at Lower Genegantslet, September 27, 1847, the eldest son of five children of William C. and Mianda Dunn.  One sister, Mrs. H. A. Purdy, of Oxford, survives him.

Wm. E. Dunn for years chief engineer at the W. R. C. Home, Oxford, and a prominent Mason, died four years ago.  Two sisters passed away in their youth.

His earlier life he lived near his home following the trade of carpenter as that of his father.  Quite a number of buildings around Greene are still standing which he constructed.  He later removed to Oxford and was for some time before removing to Cortland, Houseman at the Soldiers' Home, until failing health caused him to give up his work and for the past five years has lived with his son, George H. Dunn.  For nearly two years he has resided at Messengerville, until a few weeks ago when his health was so bad he was removed to his son's home in Lapeer.

On June 23, 1872, he was united in marriage to Francis L. Aldrich who survives him, with one son above mentioned.  Another son was killed several years ago on the railroad above Greene.

In his earlier life, he united with the Baptist church in Greene later transferring to Oxford and then to Homer.  In the last few years of his life, his Bible was a constant companion to him and the last few days, it was a great comfort and consolation that there was a Home prepared for him, and that he was ready and waiting for the summons, a patient sufferer, kind and courteous, a loving father.  He will be mourned by those who knew him best, his memory reverenced.

   "The faults of our Brothers
     We write upon the sands,
   Their virtues upon the
     Tablets of Love and Memory."

The funeral was held Friday at 2 o'clock from the residence of Wayland D. Parker.  Several beautiful pieces of flowers were sent by friends and neighbors. - Marathon Independent
