MRS. JANE ELIZABETH BATES

(Feb. 8, 1927)

Death followed Short Illness of Well Known and Esteemed Aged Lady of Oxford

Mrs. Jane Elizabeth Bates, widow of the later George Bates, died at her home on Mechanic street on Tuesday evening, following a short illness from heart trouble.  Mrs. Bates was the daughter of William and Jeanette Hogg Riddell and was born at Greene September 25, 1844.  In 1863 she was united in marriage with George Bates whose death occurred in 1910.  The family moved here 43 years ago and for over forty years have occupied the house where she died.

For a number of years Mrs. Bates supervised the noon hour at Oxford Academy where she faithfully discharged her duties.  She was a devoted wife and mother whose home and its duties came first.  She was a kindly neighbor who was ever ready to help her friends and was esteemed and respected by all who knew her.  A daughter, Miss Nellie Bates, died a number of years ago.  After the death of her daughter, Mrs. Bates took to her heart and home Miss Julia Hayes, who for the last twenty-five years has been to her as a daughter.

Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Edgar Brown of Johnson City and Mrs. Melvin Getter of Susquehanna, Pa., a nephew, Charles Riddell of Binghamton.

Pray service will be held at her home this Friday afternoon at 1:30.  The funeral will be held at two o'clock from St. Paul's church, of which she was for many years a communicant, Rev. H. C. Whedon, rector, officiating.  Burial in Riverview cemetery.
